Karen Stokkendal Poulsen


Karen Stokkendal Poulsen has directed several award-winning feature documentary films. Her latest film “On the inside of a military dictatorship” (2019) features unique access to Aung San Suu Kyi and the top military generals of Myanmar’s dictatorship and was screened on major international festivals, amongst others Hot:Docs in Toronto, New York Documentary Film Festival and Cph:Dox in main competitions.  It was distributed to more than 15 international TV stations and was co-produced with DR and ARTE France. Her previous film, “The Agreement” (2013), obtained unheard of access to a confidential negotiation in the EU. Due to the unique access the film is today used in major peace processes around the world and used by top diplomats for professional purposes at The Swedish Institute for Peace, London School of Economics, Oxford University, American International Society of Law and many more. The film was awarded a special commendation at PRIX EUROPA and toured the world on festivals, especially in the US, Canada and Europe. It was co-produced by DR and ZDF/Arte. Currently she is developing a feature documentary film on diplomacy, The Iran Deal, with previous HRVP Federica Mogherini as main protagonist.

She began her film career at the European Film College in 2003-2004, directing short films, before gaining a masters degree in Screen Documentary at London University, Goldsmiths College 2007-2008. She also holds a master in Political Science from Copenhagen University and has worked at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
